The 23rd International Jewelry Tokyo 2012 was held from 1/11 to 1/14 for 4 days. The economic sanction done to the Iranian Central Bank by U.K., due to the nuclear development in Iran, caused the demonstration and surprise attack to the British Embassy. Thereby Iran and British relation became tense. Also, relation between Israel and Iran came on touch-and-go aspect by this nuclear development, and brought the Middle East situation into an unpredictable state recently. European debt crisis had been accelerated by rapid plunge of Italian national bond, and this European sovereign debt crisis appeared to inflict France also. We suspect that it depends on Germany to keep Eurozone away from collapse caused by weak Euro currency.

In addition, falling rupee’s exchange rate by 20% and rising of interest rate made many company suffer, this situation made Indian economy to move slowly toward to recession. This problem is also greatly involved in our industry, in recent years has affected the market price of diamond in particular. Of course the sign of the recovery in economy could not be seen in the United States. And also China, our main business target, seemed to move slowly toward to recession. Followed by worldwide chaos in this manner, market movements is really intense such as commodity price, foreign exchange, shares in each country. And we cannot help suspecting the revival of the Lehman shock might happen depending upon the European crisis.

IJT, it was said to be predicting the industry of this year, and began in this world crisis. We had an impression to see fewer visitors than last year at venue, but a lot of buyers came to visit our booth from early morning of the first day. Despite of strong yen, 76 yen against U.S. dollar, foreign buyers were still active and had strong buying power.

Because it had been difficult to buy in Thailand affected by the flood, trend of foreign buyers’ purchase was to focus on corundum (ruby, sapphire) in particular. Emerald wasn’t so popular, and the quality required seemed to be different from what they bought in the past. Buyers had come, not only from China but also from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Arab countries, made a lot of purchase and gave us an impression that various countries became familiar.

Most of the Japanese buyers seemed to focus on buying diamond jewelry but the foreign buyers were not. Domestic sales of jewelry are in a harsh condition in general, and people want to buy only salable items. But the buyers who came to the show had positive attitude and made us Buyers had come, not only from China but also from Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Arab countries, made a lot of purchase and gave us an impression that various countries became familiar.
